Hearing God in the Midst of a Storm

Are you going through a storm in your life right now? Or maybe life is just getting overwhelming? My family has been through some storms lately that we’ve had to keep fairly private. Some of my close friends say we’ve been under attack because I was releasing my book. I don’t know if there is an actual purpose to the hardships or if it’s just a result of living in this crazy, broken world, but I know that I’m no different than anyone else. Storms and trials come whether we want them to or not. They humble us and remind us of how ‘not’ in control we really are.

One of the storms I’ve been through lately has involved the mental health of a close friend who was suicidal. This was one of those waves of life that came from the side “out of nowhere” and my boat of emotions took a beating. I obviously am not going to mention who this person is to protect their privacy, but I got a text from them saying goodbye and to tell certain people they were sorry. For ten minutes I was in a state of panic trying to find this person until I calmed myself down, asked the Lord where this person was…. and He told me. Thank God, He gave me a picture in my mind of where to go. I considered all the places my friend could be and one of them seemed dominant in my mind. I know from experience this is how the Holy Spirit shows me things. I drove to this particular parking lot and found this person behind a structure. He/She was emotionally in trouble, but not physically. We got the friend the help they needed and I can say they are on the road to recovery right now!

So, knowing how to hear His voice was really integral to working through the crisis and navigating the storm. It wasn’t the time to start learning to hear Him.

If you’ve been following my blog for long, you will know that I wrote a book that is due to come out any time. {IF you’ve read this far I will tell you something I haven’t announced yet…. you can actually order it on BarnesandNoble.com or Amazon.com but I haven’t received the first copy yet to approve that the printing is ok!} My upcoming book is about learning how to hear the voice of God. One of the chapters is about how to hear Him in tumultuous times. I would go as far to say that you need to learn how to hear Him especially FOR the tumultuous times. I’ve practiced and practiced and practiced learning to hear Him. This to me, was an ultimate test of whether or not I hear Him…because the outcome could have been so different. When the storms of life come, doubts come naturally. When doubts come, James 1:6 says that we are driven and tossed by the wind. Hearing His voice during a tumultuous time is like being handed a line connected to an anchor.  The winds of emotion may still threaten to slap you around but you have something to hold on to until the waves die down.

A few days later, after this crisis I was still experiencing some stress from the emotion of it all. I wasn’t sure my friend really was OK and I heard His voice again. This time I wasn’t asking Him anything, He just spoke it to my mind in the form of a thought. Because I’ve practice hearing Him in my thoughts when the waves of life were calm, I was comfortable knowing it was His voice.  “The crisis is over, (this person) is going to be OK.” The waves hadn’t completely died down yet, so if I just looked at the waves I could continue to ride the emotions and get knocked around. Instead, I chose to rest in what I had heard and TRUST Him. A few days later a professional counselor was telling me that things were OK and much better. Thank God for His voice and the anchor it is when you can hear Him during a storm!

If you’re going through a storm or just feel overwhelmed, I encourage you to take a few minutes to close your eyes and listen to this song… let Him speak to you through this WorshipMob cover of “Here”.

This is not just a shameless plug for my book. If you are struggling to learn to hear His voice, I do encourage you to get a copy of Snatchproof, The Art of Hearing God’s Voice. It will take you through practical steps to learn how to confidently hear Him.
